Directors who make Tamil cinema news

The most important person in a film is not the hero, it’s the director. The director is the captain of the ship. It’s his vision that unravels on screen and takes you on a journey with the hero.  He is the one who selects the story and in some cases writes it. When it comes to Tamil cinema news, directors feature in them quite a lot.

How do directors turn into brands?

Tamil cinema has hundreds of directors but there are just a handful in every generation who manage to leave a lasting impression.  Their talent transcends time and their work is watched even today by film buffs and students. Thillana Mohanambal for instance which featured SIvaji Ganesan and Padmini was released in 1968 and directed by A.P. Nagarajan became an iconic film of its time.

Icons of the eighties and nineties

With the passage of time, Tamil cinema threw up many iconic directors K. Balachander, Balu Mahendra, Bharathiraja, K. Bhagyaraj whose films in the eighties and the nineties had a cult following.  Directors such as these had become a brand.

K.Balachander has made movies of international standard with powerful scripts rooted in the Indian cultural ethos yet with a thought process way ahead of his times. Some of his movies were bold and a few of his female protagonists in films such as Sindhu Bhairavi were immensely bold and went against the existing social norms.

Balu Mahendra’s best known film was Moondram Pirai, a sensitive film about the love affair that blooms between a woman with amnesia and a man who cares for her like a child. His films have been acclaimed for their themes and also for his incredible visual sense. He was a master of the visual medium.

  1. Bhagyaraj’s forte was his sense of humour, his films rang with laughter. His movies were pure entertainment though he did have movies with a social message too. Bharathiraja’s rural romances brought to the screen a freshness and boldness in exploring forbidden love between two warring castes, diverse religions, people from different strata in society and so on. In fact, his work was constantly discussed in the Tamil cinema news section of magazines and newspapers.

The contemporary revolution

Director Manirathnam was from a family with a filmi background. He had qualified in Management when he started out and worked as a consultant but he realised that his heart was not in it. Then, started his career in cinema with a Kannada film titled Pallavi Anu Pallavi which fetched him the Best Screenplay Award from the Kannada Government. He brought that fresh, urban chic into many of his films.  Whatever he does turns into Tamil cinema news.

Today, we are familiar with directors that rule the roost like Shankar, Gautham Menon, A.R. Murugadoss, Selvaraghavan, Bala, K.V. Anand and others. Not to be forgotten is Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan, besides being a big star, he has successfully directed films too. This is just a small list, there are many other directors who have made a big mark and make Tamil cinema news too.
